Excerpts from Client
Testimonials for
Public Dynamics Coaching
(you can see the
full letters and contact info by clicking on the links)
Milo's approach to helping people with
their speaking has been implemented in:
- one-on-one coaching
- mini-group coaching (2-5 people)
- classroom settings
- keynote programs about speaking
Here are partial examples from a number of
them (with links to the full letters):
Coaching Testimonial from
Jeff Villani,
VP of Human Resources, Manchester Hyatt Hotel
We
brought you in to help make two of our key people look more "prepared,
polished, and powerful" (as you often say) when they need to speak.
Well, you've done just that!
In a
pretty short amount of time, you have transformed how these two managers
come across. Neither did a bad job before, but now there's an
excitement and a spark to them when they are up there that holds
everyone's attention. Chad and
Aimee had only positive things to say about the training and Chad even
mentioned that it has helped him feel more confident at work and out in
public. Aimee was pleased with how she learned different ways to
approach a subject by using the story aspect.

Villani) |
Coaching Testimonial from
Dr. Virgil Hilliard,
Anesthesiologist at Kaiser Permanente, Physician-in-Charge Garfield Specialty Center
"I was excited by how quickly you identified specific ways
that I could both fix issues that I had and help me play up
my talents in other areas. Whether I'm doing a light
presentation or a serious medical one now, I am applying
your Four Steps to Successful Speech Structure and working
that handout on the 7 Variants of Vocal Variety. The
difference is tremendous.
"I feel more certain in putting a program together, less
nervous as it approaches (because I know HOW to prepare
now), and more confident in my delivery. And I'm enjoying
the compliments afterward.
"This will be a real boon to me as I work toward
opportunities and promotions here at Kaiser Permanente."

Hilliard) |
Coaching Testimonial from
Dr.
John Jenrette,
CEO, Sharp Community Medical Group
"I’ve participated in many programs on speaking skills over
the years, but this was my first time trying individual
executive coaching on the topic − and what a difference!
Your working directly with me advanced my knowledge and
abilities to a level that group lessons never could.
"The one-on-one
approach allowed you to focus solely in areas where I needed
development as a CEO speaking to my organization. Together,
we determined areas in which growth would benefit me and you
tailored exercises directly relevant to programs that I
give, setting that growth in motion.
"The most definitive
moments of payoff were after you worked with me on specific
upcoming programs. Your ability to help me find more
powerful words, streamline my ideas more effectively, build
stories with strong imagery, and communicate the final
speech in a dynamic style is making an impact on my
audiences. After my presentation this week, I had two
doctors came up to me and tell me how much they enjoyed my
presentation. Doctors! A tough bunch to impress!
"I had confided
in a colleague that I'd hired a coach. The day after the
presentation, he approached me to say he’s seen a noticeable
improvement in the quality of both my material and
performance. He also said he could see that audience’s
attention was decidedly stronger than in the past. "

Jenrette)
Here's an email from Dr.
Jenrette six months later:
Milo,
I am getting great
feedback
at my most recent talks
and lots of questions on how I did this.
Today I presented at the Sharp Leadership
conference to tell people how I was a “Learning
Leader". I told the story of how I wanted to improve
my presentation skills and how I hired a speaking coach
with improv skills and
demonstrated some of what I learned and gave a
hugely successful presentation.
Mike Murphy, the CEO
of Sharp HealthCare, told me
there are going to be lots of people who want to
find out who I worked with and there were lots of
congratulations afterward.
Our
Director of the Six
Sigma team here at Sharp HealthCare
texted me (during the meeting!) and he has been
looking for a way to improve his team of black belts
on presentation skills, facilitating their work
groups, etc., but he had not found anything very
innovative. He and I talked after the meeting and
you'll be hearing from him soon!
Thanks again, Milo and I have a feeling there will
be more interest coming from Sharp.

Coaching Letter:
John Hartman,
President of MEA-Digital
"...Within
a few weeks these [7 pairs of] employees were visibly
improving their communication and presentation skills. They
were able to apply the enhanced skills to actual client
situations almost immediately. And their enhanced skills
were noticed by the company CEO during a subsequent client
presentation....

Coaching Testimonial from
Marcio de Andrade,
Physicist at
SPAWAR,
The US Navy's information dominance
systems command for space and naval
warfare systems
"I'm
extremely pleased that I was referred to you for coaching on my public
speaking skills. Highly-technical engineering issues are difficult to
explain to others, let alone in an interesting manner. As SPAWAR is the
US Navy's information dominance systems command for space and naval
warfare systems, most of what we do is indeed highly technical.
Your
playful approach and willingness to dig into my material yielded not
only better delivery on my part, but a far better program for me to
deliver.
Incorporating just a little humor with your help, making better use of
my visuals, and redoing my opening were just a few of the factors that
made this presentation more successful for me. I now feel surer that I
could do a better job the next time I have a program to put together,
though I do hope to be able to work with you again to continue mastering
the skills we worked on."

de Andrade) |
Coaching Testimonial from
Lee Krevat, Director at
San Diego Gas & Electric
"As
someone who speaks on behalf of San Diego Gas & Electric on a regular
basis...I was excited how quickly you identified ways that I could play
to and improve my strengths!
"In just
our first meeting, you showed me how my main story and points would be
more effective just by changing the order in which I told them and
changing slightly which points I stressed. So simple once I saw it, but
it took the fresh perspective and experience you brought to help me
identify improvements. That same story now:
·
catches
the audience's attention more from the start
·
is more
moving when I get to the key point
·
makes the
point hit home in a more memorable way
·
transitions more cleanly into the business points I want to make
Just as
importantly, our discussion on “steps to successful speech structure”
gives me a formula to keep in mind for future presentations.
It was
great to work with someone who was so quickly able to take me to the
next level without making me feel self-conscious about the style I
brought to the table. In fact, I feel like you didn’t change my style,
but focused it in the right direction.
I would
recommend you to anyone at any level who wanted to perform better in
speeches, both in creating great material and improving the quality of
delivery."

Krevat) |
Classroom Setting Testimonial from
Greg Godek, 2006-2007 President, National Speakers Association,
San Diego
Chapter, host city for the 2007 National Convention
"When everyone in the house is already a professional
speaker, it can be hard to get them to focus on your message
instead of dissecting your delivery. Yet it was clear from
the buzz in the room that no one wanted to leave for their
next session because they were having such fun and learning
so much together.
"People were writing down plenty of what you said; there was
so much in there that could be applied at all levels. The
newer speakers were getting fundamentals they needed to hear
while the highly-experienced speakers were getting a fresh
look at their old ways. I have no question that the
attendees left with a variety of action items that they can
and will implement to make themselves more dynamic.
"Most exciting was to see the folks in the room delve into
the action…from your writing exercises to improvisational
work to playing with delivery techniques I'd never even
heard of before."
(See the whole letter from Mr.
Godek) |
Classroom Setting Testimonial from
Jennifer Clecker,
Registered Nurse and Team Lead of Sales, Clinical Manager for Patient Monitoring
Covidien, makers of numerous hospital medical devices
"I
have gotten many reports already about the improved quality
of their presentations and the impact they are now making
since our session. They are also reporting very positive
feedback from their audiences, after the sessions, that they
weren’t getting before...
"We particularly found the feedback helpful. I really liked
that it wasn't a one-size-fits-all. The advice you gave
each presenter on my team was so varied, but spot on for
that person. I could see the nods in the room as you were
speaking. Your friendly style made it easy for people to
eagerly hear where they needed to improve without any
defensiveness, in part because everything you suggested felt
attainable…and even fun!
"Probably
the piece that sunk in the most was the value of the
Capture/Transition. I noticed some initial resistance to
the concept, but when you ad-libbed a specific example of
how that could work for us by using our product and research
studies as the example, it really added another layer of
value. That was when we all truly realized that we can be
much more interesting while still covering the same material
and still being seen as "professional"
−
something many people are afraid of losing if they veer off
the typical format."
(See the whole letter from Ms.
Clecker) |
Coaching Testimonial from Kurt Wallien,
President of Roberta's Exotic Gardens
(as seen on the QVC
network)
"Until I
started my speech coaching work with you, I had no idea how much more
effective my presentation skills could become! Our work together with
both improv (to boost my flexibility and creativity) and rehearsal (to
make planned material sound like I was speaking off the top of my head)
has absolutely paid off!
QVC staff
have told me that I'm appearing much more likeable, convincing, and
interesting while talking about pretty much the same topics I was before.
Your ability to help me find what’s interesting and speak its truth in an
articulate manner that suits MY style has boosted Roberta’s sales in
2004. "
(See the whole letter from Mr. Wallien) |
Coaching Testimonial from
Michael Pusnik,
Senior Financial Services Representative for
Foresters Financial (then-called
First Investors)
"What I
loved about your approach was that it wasn't about putting me in the box
of 'how financial investors should sound.' You took the time to get to
know me and my style and work from that point. As you said, 'More than
half of the job here is to bring out what you already do well…whatever
else we improve upon is a bonus.' Together, we found ways to make
strides in both areas."
(See the whole letter from Mr.
Pusnik) |
Mini-Group Coaching Testimonial from Todd Juneau,
Senior Vice President of
Aviatech
(digital and integrated marketing communications)
"When
we asked you to come in and do a 1-on-3 presentation skill
coaching with three of our staff members, we hoped to begin to notice
changes in time. When the changes at a client presentation were notable
after only the second session, though, we knew we were on to
something in working with you and Public Dynamics.
Public
speaking is generally not a class people are eager to take; for one of
your pupils the word “terrifying” came to mind. So it says a lot that
these three looked forward to the sessions with you and have expressed
an interest in our extending the program beyond our initial agreement.
To hear all three use the word “fun” to describe this program is an
unexpected pleasure.
After I
finally got to meet with you last week, I can see why. You’ve read our
general business needs well, zeroed in quickly on where the issues are
for these three people, put them at ease, and are clearly helping them
progress…all with a rather light-hearted approach to a serious topic.
We’d started out only planning to send these three, but now we’re
starting to consider who else might benefit from your slightly
unorthodox approach that has such an impact. Although I have been
giving presentations for many years, I would like to see what you could
do to take me to the next level!"

Juneau) |
Coaching Testimonial from
Daniel Tautges,
President of Global Data Center Management
"I
could tell that you saw the significance of the data I needed to cover
and made a strong effort to understand my business goals, but were still
dedicated to making me appear more dynamic and my material more exciting
in the process.
"By the
time we were done, it was a very different program that I was ready to
give. There was appropriate humor (tailored to be kept within my
comfort zone), a much more attention-holding PowerPoint that wouldn’t
cause “glaze-over syndrome”, and my delivery sounded far more
interesting. The vocal exercises, warm-ups, and scripting ideas you
shared helped me to see how I could make this material more appealing to
listen to − and actually more fun to deliver as well...
"You even
had me laughing at my own material; a good sign that I'd hold the
attention of others…which I believe I did."

Tautges) |
Classroom Setting Testimonial
from
Irene Stillings, Executive Director,
San Diego Regional Energy
Office"What a powerful way to blend teamwork concepts with
practical, applicable ways to strengthen our public speaking
and writing...[the class] left them with ideas they could
really apply to their work.
Your ability, both instructing and demonstrating, was
inspiring. the group really looks forward to your
returning for more direct feedback on both
the writing and
presentation skills."

Coaching via video: Letter from
Vilis Ozols
President of Ozols Business Group and CSP
(highly-sought "Certified Speaking
Professional" designation)
"I
have used both humor coaches and well-known speaking coaches
with with me...your detailed review [of my video] and
practical recommendations were as insightful and beneficial
as any coaching I have received in the industry.
"I
believe that you bring an acute ability to gauge both a
speaker's stage presence and the audience perceptions, but
then also recognize the humor opportunities (and
transgressions).
"The
recommendations and suggestions you gave were easily
implementable and had an immediate positive impact on my
presentation as a whole."

Ozols) |
Coaching Setting Testimonial from
Colette Carlson, Professional Speaker, President of
Colette Carlson
Communications"Making the decision to be coached by Milo Shapiro was
a wise investment for the growth of my business.
"Not
only did Milo’s incredible sense of humor and creativity
help me create a better presentation for my audience, but
his coaching on comedic timing will have a dramatic impact
on my delivery.
"Our time flew by because I
was having so much fun while embracing new techniques that
will bring value to my clients."

Classroom Setting Testimonial from
Dan Dawson, Customer Relations Manager of the
Big Blue Bus, the mass transit system for
the City of Santa Monica
"...I was most excited by the response in the room when
everyone participated in the vocal variety exercise. It
made points that I have tried to express to them so much
clearer because they could see it for themselves when their
partners were participating and succeeding. This was the
source of much discussion in our business meeting later.
In terms of coming across more energetic and likeable, what
a kick it was to hear everyone applaud after Donna
participated and say, “We’ve never seen you come across like
that before!” Even though the exercise pushed
her comfort zone, you could see in her face that she enjoyed
the accolades. I think we'll see her applying these skills
on the job now that she knows she can do it."

Dawson) |

Coaching Setting Testimonial from Kara
Sandler, salesperson and marketing presenter
" I
had no idea how much having a coach could make a difference
but I'm sure glad I found out!...Your tricks for breaking down the
section that I was most struggling with memorizing allowed
me to recite the section accurately for the first time. And
once I'd done it once, I could let go of that “I can’t do
this!” feeling that I now know was stopping me."

Keynote Setting Testimonial from
EvE Bond,
planning committee coordinator for the
International Assoc. of Administrative Professionals
"Now
that I've seen the evaluations, it’s obvious that
[attendees] were even more impressed than I'd realized.
"Comments ranged from, 'Excellent speaker; by far, the
best speaker of the morning' to 'Milo Shapiro made this one hour mini-workshop well worth
the cost of the entire seminar'...
"It truly was an hour chock-full of ideas I know our
attendees will apply!"

Coaching Setting Testimonial from
Dr. John R, Research Scientist
"I
now know secrets that make presentations look good…and easy. I know how to
put work into it to give it that look.
Together,
we pruned down the talk to sharpen the message, added touches to better hold
attention, and worked on my delivery. The work was extremely helpful...I
stood up, cracked out my introduction, got their attention, and with the
preparation behind me and a great message before me, I couldn’t believe how
smoothly the delivery went and how much fun it was...
I had
many, many compliments afterward (accompanied by warm smiles, so I think
they were genuine) and the best was a leader who came up to me and said I
made him "proud to be in this field." Another whose opinion I value said I
"hit it out of the park."

Coaching Setting Testimonial from
Sarita Maybin, Professional Speaker and Author
"Although
I've been a full time professional speaker for almost 16 years, I still
found your feedback during our coaching session quite valuable.
"I greatly appreciated the astute observations you shared such as your
suggestion on strategically pausing for impact. Your other advice such as
kicking off my presentation more powerfully by jumping right in--without the
"good morning" preamble--allowed me to make my subsequent presentations more
crisp and impactful.
"I also found useful your coaching on timing and use of humor, both of which
are critical parts of an engaging presentation. Your background in improv
serves you well and benefited me as a recipient of your coaching services.
"Your title, "Creative Energy Officer" (CEO), is well-deserved, because you do
indeed energize presentations!"
